About
GEORGE PAYNE MCLEAN, Connecticut’s 42nd governor was born in Simsbury, Connecticut, on October 7, 1857. After graduating from Hartford High School in 1877, McLean studied law, was admitted to the bar, and established a practice in Hartford. He entered politics as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives, an office he held from 1883 to 1885. He also served as clerk of the State Board of Pardons from 1884 to 1901, was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1889 to 1891, and was the U.S. District Attorney from 1892 to 1896. McLean won the 1900 Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected Governor of Connecticut. During his tenure, the governor’s administrative staff was restructured, as well the state militia; and a tax commission office was founded. McLean did not seek reelection due to ill health, and left the governor’s office on January 7, 1903. After convalescing, McLean was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served from 1911 to 1929. Governor George P. McLean died on June 6, 1932, and is buried at the Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury, Connecticut.
