LAS VEGAS—National Governors Association (NGA) Chair Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval today gathered representatives from more than 25 states to discuss transportation innovations happening at the state level. The meeting is part of Gov. Sandoval’s NGA chair’s initiative, Ahead of the Curve: Innovation Governors.
“Transportation is a rapidly evolving area that is reshaping not just the present, but also the future,” said Gov. Sandoval. “New connected, automated and electric transportation technologies are transforming our world and altering the ways businesses and industries operate, affecting every aspect of our lives.
“We are living in a time when the science fiction we grew up with is becoming reality.”
The 2018 Consumer Electronics Show served as a backdrop for the summit, which delved into topics such as autonomous and electric vehicles, drones, ridesharing and more.
On Wednesday morning, Gov. Sandoval gave a one-on-one interview about how state governments are proactively planning for technological disruption, including within the areas of workforce, communications, infrastructure and cybersecurity.
Later that morning, representatives from Amazon, Lyft and Uber, as well as self-driving car company Waymo and electric vehicle company Proterra, participated in a panel with Gov. Sandoval about how government and the private sector can work together to take full advantage of technological transformation.
On Thursday, NGA Vice Chair Montana Gov. Steve Bullock and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder will join Gov. Sandoval for a panel at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) moderated by Consumer Technology Association President Gary Shapiro. They will discuss the best methods for job creation, economic growth and entrepreneurship in today’s technological climate.
The summit will conclude Friday with NGA’s State of the State Address, delivered by Gov. Sandoval and Gov. Bullock as part of the CES Government conference. The State of the States Address will be streamed live on Facebook at 11:30 a.m. PT/2:30 p.m. ET.
