On Thursday, October 26th, the National Governors Association (NGA) hosted its monthly briefing for the Criminal Justice Policy Advisors (CJPA) network. The briefing explored how states are evaluating AI and other emerging technologies and how these technologies are being applied to the criminal justice and public safety sectors.
The briefing featured a presentation by Dr. Neal Parikh, Adjunct Associate Professor with the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia University, Josiah Raiche, Director of Artificial Intelligence at the Vermont Agency of Digital Services, and Madelyn Roman-Scott, Project Manager of State Initiatives at the Council of State Governments (CSG).
The briefing included a discussion of how AI and other data tools are being applied to existing criminal justice challenges, the role of bias and transparency in its implementation, and how robust data collection can help to mitigate some of the risk of these technologies.
