On Thursday, February 29th, the National Governors Association (NGA) hosted its monthly briefing for the Criminal Justice Policy Advisors (CJPA) network. The briefing discussed the data and analysis included in the Year-End 2023 Update for the Crime Trends in U.S. Cities report, released by the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) in January 2024.
The briefing featured remarks from John Buntin, Project Director of the Crime Trends Working Group and Ernesto Lopez, Research Specialist with CCJ. The briefing included an overview of the data provided in the 2023 Year-End Report, including an assessment of the historical trends for various crime rates, including homicide, assault, carjacking, motor vehicle theft, larceny, and shoplifting. The briefing concluded with a discussion of how states can respond to these ongoing crime trends through evidence-based prevention strategies.
