States and international partners will explore policy solutions at a conference hosted by NGA and embassies of Australia, Canada, Denmark
The National Governors Association and the embassies of Australia, Canada and Denmark are hosting the Global Energy Solutions Summit later this month to help governors and states gather ideas and share developments in three emerging energy technologies.
Participants in the two-day summit will learn about offshore wind, which Denmark has pioneered since 1991; energy storage, in which Australia has shown leadership including a 100 MW project built in 100 days in 2017; and carbon capture, utilization and storage, for which Canada’s innovative efforts include the world’s first large-scale carbon capture project, built in 2014.
Installed offshore wind capacity in the United States is set to grow 550-fold by 2035, generating enough to power around 7 million homes. Some 33 states have implemented or are taking action to adopt energy-storage policies through executive orders, legislation or utility commission actions, harnessing new technologies to facilitate the greater use of renewable resources and reduce the need for “peaking” power plants. There are six large-scale carbon capture, utilization and storage projects in four states, including one in Texas that captures more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide per year.
State and international partners will identify policy solutions to advance deployment of these technologies, such as setting mandates, establishing incentive programs and removing regulatory and policy barriers. They also will discuss regional, multi-state solutions that are essential to the success of the three technologies.
