About
ARCH A. MOORE JR. was born in Moundsville, West Virginia. A recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, Governor Moore is a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1948 and a law degree in 1951 from West Virginia University. He was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1952. In 1956, he won election to the first of six consecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected governor in 1968 and served two consecutive four-year terms. In 1984, he was elected to a third term. He chaired the Southern States Energy board and the Southern Governors’ Association. He was chairman of the National Governors Association (then called the National Governors Conference) from 1971-1972.
